Winemakers "Statements regarding Vintage 2010"

Tremmel Winery, Rust
The weather conditions this year made consistency in the vineyard extremely important, especially regarding foliage treatment and pest control. The wines are wonderfully fruity as a result of the long vegetation period. The cool, dry autumn ensured that noble rot spread slowly in Rust’s vineyards. Our noble sweet wines have a wonderfully piquant acidity.

A & H Nittnaus Winery, Gols:
Late shoot, moist spring weather, warm weather during flowering, stopped abruptly, rain, cold, coulure (SL, GV). Unusually cold, then 3 weeks of high temperatures (38 °C), dryness. Then more rain, cool temperatures, high rainfall in August, modest ripeness at the beginning of September, first signs of botrytis (problems with peronospora and oidium throughout the year), harvest began on 8th September, damp weather conditions, consistent rain, low sugar, high acidity, small harvest. Sunshine and stable weather finally came around 18th and 19th September, Indian summer from 18th to 24th September, cool nights, sugar content remained roughly the same, more rain on 25th and 26th September, over 60mm of rainfall, followed by relatively good weather but not particularly warm. Small vintage, low sugar content, high acidity, extremely small harvest when it comes to BF, CH, SL (approximately a third of a normal harvest). Amount of Zweigelt was ok. Harvest over on 14th October. Red wines have a less intensive colour while the white wines are bursting with wonderful fruit flavours.

Kollwentz Winery, Großhöflein:
2010 will go down in our records as a very difficult vintage. The weather was often cool with high rainfall, although good during the harvest. We are very pleased with our sweet wines and white wines, despite the small amounts. The red wines appear to be fruity and spicy. We have decided not to bottle our top wines this year.

Grenzhof Fiedler Winery, Mörbisch:
2010 presented us with one of the smallest harvests we have had in a long time. Despite this, we are looking at our 2010 vintage positively and not focussing on the negative aspects. A fairly normal amount of grapes had reached modest ripeness in the moist and cool summer of 2010. However, only a small percentage of the grapes were able to fully profit from the strength of the vines and go on to produce good quality wines.

The white wines impress with pleasant fruit aromas, a racy yet ripe acidity and a balanced body. The reds are intense in colour and Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch in particular exhibit rich substance and delicate tannins.

Zantho, Thomas Gratzer, Andau:
The 2010 vintage was a great challenge for us – the cold weather resulted in the smallest harvest in the past 20 years in the Neusiedlersee area.  Depending on the grape variety, we suffered a loss of 30-40%. This was due to the rather moderate conditions throughout the year and strict grape selection in the vineyards. The quality of the wines is nevertheless satisfactory – we’re looking forward to crisp white wines with deep fruits and moderate alcohol content and elegant red wines with medium ageing potential!

Krutzler Winery,  Deutsch Schützen:
Very good quality vintage, but yield was 20% smaller than on average.

Pepi Umathum, Frauenkirchen:
The ample water supply helped to improve biological soil activity and the formation of humus. Overall 2010 was a challenging year for quality winemakers. Autumn brought a period of fair weather which was ideal for the harvest. The 2010 vintage is delicately fruity, lively and has moderate alcohol.

Ernst Triebaumer Winery, Rust:
2010 was characterised by unusually moist and cool weather conditions. The long vegetation period – without a stop of growth, leads us to expect complex, unique, fruity and durable wines…. perhaps similar to 1989?

Plants and grass were planted between the vines to make the roots in the upper soil layers compete against each other – this encourages deeper roots. This technique improves the soil structure, promotes biological soil activity and the formation of humus, while preventing soil loss through erosion and avulsion. The unusual conditions demanded creativity – special steps were taken instead of the more standard ones. The result was quite small, loose and light berries. Our extremely careful hand picking and selection from the vines lead to a small but fine harvest.

We believe that the 2010 vintage will be fresh, light and fruity. He who allows his wine to develop character and individuality can expect high quality and long lasting wines.
We are proud of the fruits of our efforts this year.
